The Le Mans Ultimate community has raised questions after the sim racing title and its Motorsport Games publisher, published today (4th November), implemented automatic rate limiting and IP banning for what it terms “out of normal requests”.

It follows several third-party data-scraping services appearing online, where after logging in with a Steam account, users can track past race results, plus safety rating and driver rating changes.

This can be useful and interesting information, something that Le Mans Ultimate’s native RaceControl service (currently) doesn’t offer.

However, some of these new platforms are scraping player data without permission, meaning LMU player stats, without player knowledge, can be accessed publicly.

Another challenge has been impersonating sim racers via Steam’s authorisation service (using Steam to log in), and using their account to repeatedly request player data. This in turn flags that account as suspicious, as it requests thousands of data points, and could incorrectly lead to an unwitting player ban.

These requests lead to millions of API calls for Motorsport Games, which in turn, it has to pay for. The sheer quantity could also lead to backend instabilities for all drivers.

AI-powered vibe coding tools such as Loveable, which use Anthropic’s Claude language model, have made it relatively straightforward to create platforms such as these LMU-specific stat trackers.

“Le Mans Ultimate does not have a public API and many of these projects are relying on accessing information (name and results and ranking) using your login information via Steam’s authorization service, or in some cases your game token and therefore impersonating you,” reads the statement.

“We have seen these create millions of backend calls – often, with very little thought to load and caching which can cause problems with RaceControl as a service. Because of this, we have implemented automatic rate limiting and IP banning for out of normal requests.

“As a Studio, we are asking you to not create or use these services (tools that monitor & display your live LMU SR/DR rank & results history) and be mindful what third party tools or apps you install. Their existence is against the EULA and Privacy Policy, not because we’re trying to stifle creativity, but because of important service stability and legal concerns.

Other AI-created add-ons shouldn’t be affected

While this statement and the associated changes are aimed at limiting stat-tracking programmes, several Le Mans Ultimate community members raised concerns about other community-created projects.

Traxion has confirmed with Motorsport Games that third-party AI-created add-ons such as fan-created career modes or broadcast tools are not affected.

“While we do recognise that many of you would like a public API, it’s not something we can support at this time,” it concluded.
