The first two Rennsport R1 races of the night were at Le Mans, where Porsche Coanda dominated last season, only to be disqualified after the races for track limits infringements. Their pace showed again this season, with Charlie Collins the polesitter in a Porsche Coanda one-two.
They’d break away early as a big battle for third commenced, in which Nico Nunninghoff went off at Indianapolis after contact with Caique Oliveira. And the drama wouldn’t end there for Nunninghoff, as he clashed with Issac Price during his fightback, causing the Brit to go off in a big way at the Porsche Curves.
Price would drop back into a big fight for eighth, in which he’d be victorious, but out front Porsche Coanda cruised to a comfortable one-two. An important win after a slow start to their championship defence one week earlier.
Marcell Csincsik’s fantastic start to the campaign continued in Group B, as he took pole position for TC Esports ahead of his teammate Jack Keithley. But unlike Porsche Coanda, the start for TCE wasn’t so good, as Keithley was hit by Max Benecke into turn one, spinning him around.
Csincsik would break away very quickly because of the carnage, but the crashes would continue, as at Indianapolis on the first lap, Gianotta and Chadwick made contact and flew into the wall. Keithley would only battle past to seventh, but TCE would hold the series lead after race one nevertheless.
Qualifying for Race 3 at Laguna Seca was one of the most exciting of the year in Rennsport R1. Just as Porsche Coanda looked to be heading to another one-two, Nico Nunninghoff eclipsed them both before Caique Oliveira eventually took pole with an extraordinary late lap. And things would get worse for Porsche Coanda too, as Collins spun at turn one, and Rogers at turn two.
At the front, Nunninghoff passed Oliveira somewhat without resistance, and took another victory in a great year of R1 competition for him. Behind, Porsche Coanda’s pair finished in seventh and eighth, leaving them with more work to do in the championship’s final rounds.
In the final race of the day, TCE had the chance to drive home their advantage, and Csincsik did that in Qualifying with another pole. While he got away cleanly, it was another dramatic start as Tim Schreuder flipped upside down out of turn one.
Further ahead, Csincsik dominated the race, and with teammate Keithley backing up with solid points too, TCE would have a 14 point championship lead after Round 2. It’s a surprising start to the Fall season, with the reigning champions Porsche Coanda struggling, and it’s TC Esports who have filled the void and taken control of the opening two rounds of this season.
